Meet KUBASONICS, the Festival headliners!

The Kubasonics are an award-winning Ukrainian-Canadian “speed-folk” ensemble based in Newfoundland and Labrador, widely recognized for their innovative fusion of traditional Ukrainian music with contemporary influences.

Kubasonics are arguably Newfoundland’s finest Ukrainian band. This award winning group combines top-flight musicianship spiced with quirky humour, a dizzying array of exotic traditional instruments, and an eclectic high-energy stage show. Their unique brand of mile a minute speed-folk is balanced with haunting ancient melodies and heart-warming stories that offer a window into a unique and vibrant culture. From large concert stages to intimate workshop settings they never fail to capture an audience. And with splashes of traditional Newfoundland tunes as an important part of their hybrid musical mix, a Kubasonics show is an experience not soon to be forgotten.

Kubasonics have achieved popularity beyond the Ukrainian community through their extensive touring, award winning recordings, and imaginative online presence. They’ve performed in 11 provinces/territories of Canada, throughout Eastern Europe (including 2 tours of Ukraine), South America, and the Caribbean. Their 7 albums of Ukrainian music have been nominated for 12 Juno, East Coast Music Association, and MusicNL Awards, winning 4. They’ve appeared at major Canadian and Ukrainian festivals, on national TV and radio, were shortlisted for the 2017 Borealis Music Prize, voted “Best Band to See Live in Newfoundland,” and received the Alberta Council for Ukrainian Arts “Innovation in Artistry Award”.

Brian Cherwick is the founder, artistic director, and principal driving force behind the Kubasonics. He established the group in 1996 and serves as its lead musician and arranger, shaping its signature “speed-folk” sound through his expertise as a multi-instrumentalist and ethnomusicologist. A master of over 40 instruments, his work has earned national recognition, including the prestigious Taras Shevchenko Medal – the highest honour granted by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress.
